The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint, and it connects the lower jaw to the skull. It is one of the most complex joints in the body, being located in a network of bones, teeth, muscles and nerves. Because of where it is located and the function it performs, TMJ disorders affect many areas of the body, from the migraine headaches to numbness and tingling in the arms and pain in the neck and shoulders.
TMJ disorders (also known as TMD) is a general term used to describe a variety of symptoms related to jaw joint dysfunctions, including:
- Headaches
- Chronic pain in the face, head, neck and shoulders
- Migraines and headaches
- Jaw pain
- Sore, chipped, broken or worn teeth
- Limited jaw movement
- Clicking and popping in the jaw
- Snoring
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Frequent ear infections
- Restricted airways
In many cases, TMJ disorders are a result of bad bites. These bad bites force the muscles into strained positions, which leads to pain and discomfort. Using epigenetic science and a neuromuscular approach, our dentist can determine the ideal position of your jaw and provide a treatment to restore your teeth, jaw and joints to their optimal position. There are a variety of treatments available, ranging from relaxation exercises to restorative dental treatments, oral appliances, orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery.
We also check children at an early age to determine if they are at risk for a TMJ disorder so that we can treat the problem early.
